Some principles of Hanna Somatic Education

  • Hanna Somatic Education is a gentle movement practice that is done slowly and not forced.

  • It is important to stay within your range of comfortable movement and never move into pain.

  • The movement protocols are based on natural neuromuscular patterns that humans perform naturally.

  • Sometimes people get stuck in unhealthy patterns and need to be reminded how to get back to moving more naturally.

  • When the movements we’ll be teaching are practiced regularly, habitual tensions throughout your body can be released and pain often goes away.

To Prepare for class

  • Set up a comfortable space on the floor where you can widen your arms into a “T”.

  • Wear loose comfortable clothing that you can move in.

  • Drink some water before and after class to stay hydrated.

  • You can choose whether you’d like your camera turned on or off. We would appreciate if you introduce yourself to the group with your camera turned on so we can get to know one another a bit!

  • If you’d like direct input, keep your camera turned on and aimed towards you during class. It’s best to aim your head towards the camera and your feet lengthened away from the camera with your body perpendicular to the camera. You may need to practice with your screen to figure out how to be sure your entire body is visible.

  • If you’d like background information prior to the first day of class, pick up a copy of Thomas Hanna’s book Somatics. We’ll be teaching exercises that are written about at the end of the book. We’ll also go over the Cat Stretch, a wonderful series of exercises to relieve stress and tension, assist in peak performance, and help with sound sleep when practiced daily. Hanna’s original book title was The Myth of Aging. Indeed, you just may notice you’re feeling younger and younger as you integrate the Cat Stretch into your daily routine!
